Central Serengeti

Central Serengeti offers tremendous wildlife viewing year-round. The Seronera River and surrounding valley provide a permanent water source, attracting resident Lion and Leopard as well as elephant, Impala, Giraffe, Buffalo, warthog, Impala, Hartebeest, hippo and topi. Regardless of the time of year, visitors may spot all four big carnivores (Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Hyenas) in a day in central Serengeti. The central region's main trees are: Fig Trees, Sausage Trees and Yellow fever acacia Trees. No matter

what time of year you visit, you will most likely pass through the Seronera area to see some of the resident wildlife. It's highly recommended any time of the year!

Western Serengeti

The western Serengeti is not frequented as much as central and eastern Serengeti, which makes ideal for those looking for a more private safari. May and June are the rut season for Wildebeest and the western plains are noisy with male Wildebeest defending their temporary territories. The fabled Grumeti River runs through this region and along its banks you can often find trees like: Tamarind, fig, acacia and many shrubs. The migration must also forge the Grumeti River, which is a spectacle to behold. The river is teeming with Nile Crocodiles - the largest crocodile in the world. The open plains of the western Serengeti are dotted with bush-clump thickets. There are also lots of acacia, whistling thorn acacia trees and Desert Date Trees.

Northern Serengeti

Northern Serengeti features excellent year-round Lion, Leopard and Cheetah viewing. July through October is when the migration passes through this region and there is plenty of predatory action here. African Elephants are more common in the north than elsewhere in the Serengeti and you may encounter breeding herds. Grazing animals such as Giraffe, Impala, dikdik and Buffalo favor the grasslands, while Hippos and Crocodiles frequent the Mara and Grumeti catchments. Bird watching is rich in the seasonal marshlands. Several species of Raptors breed on cliffs and numerous other birds of prey, including Vultures and eagles, are frequently spotted soaring on the updrafts.

Eastern/Southern Serengeti

The nutritious short grass plains of eastern and southern Serengeti are home to thousands of grazers like Elands, Hartebeest antelopes, Gazelles, Wildebeest and Zebras. The natural habitat of the Cheetah is in the short grass. They are diurnal hunters, which means they are active during daylight hours and will often be spotted on safari. This area has more open plains dominated by Umbrella thorn acacias - Acacia tortilis. The Wildebeest will start to drop their young towards the end of January here. This also means that a fair number of predators are about, including: Lions, Jackals, Cheetahs and Hyenas.
